The Commander’s Mansion hosted a sold out Empowering Women in Leadership event on March 19, with panels made up of business owners, a non-profit director, and members of the City of Watertown administration.
The event was the first hosted by the City of Watertown’s Events Team and co-sponsored by the City of Watertown and the Watertown Business Coalition.
The first panel featured Roberta Miller, Interim Executive Director, Mosesian Center for the Arts; Ariel Nathanson, founder of Finances for Feminists; and Jan Taylor, owner of Get Lively Health & Fitness Studio, who also is the Development Director for New Art Center in Newton.
They spoke about the importance of finding allies and learning from them, collaborating with other business owners, and the importance of learning about finances. Miller shared how she found her own niche as a consultant early in her career. Taylor and Nathanson each discussed about the challenges of starting their own business.
The second panel included Deputy City Manager Emily Monea, Director of Public Buildings Denise Moroney, and Director of Community Design Erika Jerram.
Topics included balancing work and family, the importance of building relationships with other women in the workplace, and how to “have it all.” Monea shared how she sets boundaries at work so she can spend time with her children, Moroney discussed her experience working in the “old boys network” of the MBTA, and Jerram spoke about the importance of being a role model for girls and boys.
