The Parthenon on Athen’s Acropolis by Joseph Weiler.

Watertown photographer Joseph Weiler announced an exhibition of his photos from Greece will be on display at the Watertown Library in October.

Weiler provided the following announcement:

Joseph Flack Weiler’s photography exhibit, “A Winter in Greece, 1970” will be exhibited at the Watertown Free Public Library, 123 Main Street, Watertown, MA, 617-972-6431. Weiler’s exhibit will be shown from October 2 thru 30, 2024.

I crossed the stormy Atlantic on a Yugoslavian freighter in November, 1969. My traveling companion was Report to Greco written by Greek philosopher Nikos Kazantzakis. My guidebook was Edith Hamilton’s book, Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods & Heroes. My goal was to feel the pulse of Greek culture helped by Nikos’s insights and Ms. Hamilton’s guide to Greek mythology.

Kid & Mother, Ierapetra, Crete by Joseph Weiler.

My first step was to explore the Parthenon temple, on the Acropolis, where there had been a contest between the God Poseidon & Goddess Athena. Athena made an olive tree grow “the most prized of all trees” and won the contest.

Almond Tree Blooming, Chora Sfakion, Crete by Joseph Weiler.

An ancient olive tree grove in Delphi brought the mythology alive.

I spent time with a family gathering the ‘gray-gleaming olive that Athena showed to men.’ These olives would be pressed into olive oil.

Vineyard workers, Knossos, Crete by Joseph Weiler.

My itinerary also included time in Xanthi, Iraklion, Krista, Sita, Ierapetra, Samaria Gorge, & Chora Sfakion. I used two 35mm Nikon F Cameras and a Western Master V light meter. Film was Kodak Tri-X.

All 21 Gelatin Silver Prints were recently printed by me on Ilford Multigrade Classic Paper. This exhibit was made possible by a Grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
