Is it too late to suggest the return of automobile traffic be made permanent? Arsenal Street has never been more congested, and if cars have a way to bypass the traffic lights between Watertown Sq. points west (or the reverse), why not divert through traffic along the river route? As “road diets” reduce lanes, now more than ever, this alternative route demands to be reconsidered. I would even add a light at the Arsenal Street end to allow traffic on and off Greenough Blvd. Pedestrians and cyclists already have a paved sidewalk and dirt paths along the river. If a compromise is needed, treat this stretch of Greenough as Cambridge treats Memorial Drive: close it to traffic on Sundays in the summer.
