This is awesome. I think it’s great that Minute Man accepts students from surrounding town and it’s nice to see some of our home town kids do well and succeed…..
On the awards list, I counted 29 – maybe 30 names of kids from Watertown that received awards for various academic achievements and or Trade Excellence, etc… that’s awesome it really is….
However, – (I have to add this) – It also begs the question… if 30 students from Watertown Who attend Minute Man, received awards, – I’m curious as to how many Watertown Kids go to Minute Man? And I wonder how manny more did not get accepted due to what ever reason…..
Unfortunately it’s another example of hard working blue collar people who grew up here and some how or another were fortunate to stay in this town, but have to send our kids out of town for school, sports… etc….
How bout a trade school of our own?
Tim, I believe the number of Watertown students at Minuteman was 55 this year. That is based on the number riding the bus to school, so there could be a few more
This article also highlights another very concerning issue in Watertown and that is how many kids are leaving the public schools after middle school either for private or Minuteman. Sending 55 kids off to Minuteman is not cheap either for the town and it begs the question – Why are parents choosing to opt out of WHS? Some are leaving for the trades experience but I would bet others are leaving because of lack of faith in the WHS.
The trend for the past 5-7 years has been a large cohort of kids leaving Watertown and in some grades it is as high as 25% of the grade population. This is troubling and shows a lack of confidence by families in the Watertown Public Schools and especially the high school. I know our time in Watertown Public Schools has been marked with a lot of negative experiences and an overall feeling that the expectations for students is quite low in comparison to other schools. US News also just ranked the high schools in MA and Watertown was ranked below average at 214 out of about 320. Something is wrong when the neighboring towns are all ranked in the top 50. To me it points to a lot of internal problems, lack of accountability, weak curriculum, lack of engaged parents, and an overall feeling in the town that education is not a priority and really never has been. All one has to do is look around at our schools and notice the poor physical condition they are all in. Although new buildings won’t fix internal problems.
Hopefully before anyone talks about raising taxes in this town to rebuild schools they will first address the many internal problems in our schools.
