A free lecture on The Social Life of Black Bears will be presented presented by the Boston Chapter of the Appalachian Mountain Club at the Watertown Free Public Library on Jan. 5, 2019.
Dr. Ben Kilham will present a program on the social life of black bears and what they can teach us about being human. Ben Kilham, Ph.D. is a wildlife biologist based in Lyme, NH. His love of, and devotion to, black bears has enabled him to study their habits closely and interact with them for more than two decades. He has been the focus of several news articles and documentaries, including National Geographic’s A Man Among Bears
and Animal Planet’s Papa Bear. He is also author of the books Among the Bears: Raising Orphaned Cubs in the Wild and Out on a Limb: Origins of Intuition and Intelligence.

The Social Life of Bears Presentation sponsored by the Boston Conservation Committee and Hiking and Backpacking Committee Ben Kilham will share his fascinating observations, slides and videos, of bears in the wild as he follows cubs that have been rehabilitated and released. Learn how mother bears teach their cubs, and how bears share their territory when food is scarce. Then learn from AMC and state wildlife experts how to respond to bear encounters on your hiking and camping trips.
Light refreshments will be served. Presenter – Dr. Ben Kilham rehabilitates bear cubs at the Kilham Bear Center in New Hampshire, and is the author of a number of books. Dr. Kilham has been the subject of a full-length film by National Geographic and he has recently assisted the government of China applying his knowledge of bears to the restoration of Pandas.
