Two Watertown Firefighters took steps up the ladder with the Fire Department, while two more started their careers with the Department.
The Watertown Fire Department promoted a captain and a lieutenant and swore in two new firefighters during a ceremony at the Watertown Free Public Library on Friday.
William Maietta was promoted to Fire Captain. Ryan Gleason was promoted to Fire Lieutenant. He has been on the Department for 12 years.
The new members of the WFD are Mark Fidler and Mary Piotrowski.
Watertown Fire Chief Bob Quinn congratulated those receiving their promotions and being sworn in.
“We feel these are two well deserved promotions for two qualified individuals to help our department moving forward in a very positive way,” Quinn said. “We also feel that both of these new firefighters are great individuals, who are a fantastic additions to our Department and will serve the citizens of Watertown well.”
Town Manager Michael Driscoll congratulated the newly promoted members of the WFD and the new firefighters.
“The citizens of Watertown are very proud of their Fire Department, a Department that is progressive and is one of the best in the Commonwealth, and that the members of the Fire Department work tirelessly to make Watertown a better place to live and work,” Driscoll said.
Maietta has been on the WFD for 16 years. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2013 and as temporary captain in June 2017. In October 2017 he was assigned to Fire Prevention. He was promoted to captain on Feb 18, 2018.
Gleason joined the Fire Department in 2005, and was named temporary lieutenant in June 2017. He also previously served as temporary lieutenant twice in 2016. He was named a permanent lieutenant on Feb. 18, 2018.
Piotrowski has been to the Fire Academy already and will serve as a paramedic on the Watertown Fire Department’s Advanced Life Support ambulance. Fidler will be going to the Fire Academy in July.
Three recently hired firefighters are attending the academy now, Quinn said, and three more, in addition to Fidler, will be going to the academy in the future.
With the two new hires, the Watertown Fire Department is now fully staffed, Quinn said.
“We have the full complement of 87 firefighters,” Quinn said. “It’s been a long time (since that has happened).”
