The State competitions are underway for winter sports and Watertown High School sent competitors or will have athletes competing in the boys swimming, wrestling and boys and girls indoor track championships.
Wrestlers Medal at Divisional Meet
A young Watertown High School wrestling team came off a successful regular season, in which it went 18-10 in dual meets, and had five medalists at the Div. 3 Central Section meet at Wayland over the weekend. The Raiders sent competitors in all of the weight classes.
Freshman Waqas Khan won third place by going 4-1 in the 113 lb. class and will be competing in the Div. 3 Championship at Wakefield High School on Feb. 16 and 17.
Freshman Jack Nicolas went 3-2 in the 170 lb. weight class and won the fifth-place match. Jason Santos, a sophomore, also claimed 5th place by going 3-2 in the 195 lb. class. Junior Chris Peterson claimed fifth place in the 220 lb. class after going 3-2.
Junior Jose Aguilar competed in the 106 lb. class and went 1-3, and got 6th place.
Freshman Parsa Terani went 1-2 in the 120 lb. class, and freshman David Manoukian went 1-2 in the 145 lb. class. Mike Manoukian, a junior went 1-2 in the 152 lb. class, senior Lukas Matton went 1-2 in the 160 lb. class, and sophomore Shadi Idelkanoun went 1-2 in the 285 lb. class.
Also competing at the Divisional meet were: freshman Sebastian Correa (126 lb.), freshman Sergey Davtyan (132 lb.), senior Connor Walsh (138 lb.), and senior Tim Tat (182 lb.).
Boys Swimmers at Sectional Meet
The boys swimming team completed its first season by competing in the MIAA North Section Championships at MIT over the weekend.
Just like the girls, the boys combined with Arlington on a cooperative team this year. The Watertown-Arlington team sent two relays and had an individual qualifier in the Sectional meet.
Junior Christopher Kerrigan swam the 500 yard freestyle and finished 22nd.
The 200 free relay of Kian Rice, Michael Case, Matthew Muldrew and Kieran O’Day placed 18th at the meet.
The 400 free relay of O’Day, Case, Kerrigan and Rice came in 20th.
The 200 medley relay of Rice, Hagop Yazjian, Andrew Johnson MacDonald and O’Day finished 21st.
Track Teams Heading to Divisional Meet
Several Watertown High School track and field athletes will compete at the Div. 5 Indoor Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center on Thursday.
Boys sprinter junior Mange Camara is top seed in the 300 meters and second seeded in the 55-meter dash. The boys 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relays are both top seeded in the Div. 5 meet. Senior Edward Ferreira is seeded eighth in the long jump.
Distance runner senior Emily Koufos is second seeded in the mile run for the girls. She will be joined by senior Elizabeth Powderly, who is seeded eighth. Junior Abigael Peterson is the seventh seed in the high jump.
Also competing in individual events at the Divisional meet are:
Boys – senior Ben Landry (300 and shot put), senior Nick Cordeiro (300), senior Gus Brouiliard (600), junior Jack Barry (2 mile).
Girls – sophomore Rose Muldrew (55 dash) and sophomore Lakshmi Thangaraj (mile).
