The following information was provided by the Watertown Police Department.
Arrest
March 18, 3:04 p.m.: Police arrested a man for repeatedly returning items to Target which he had previously stolen from the store. The man was seen taking a mountain bike and a hat and walk out of the mall entrance of Target and putting them into his 1996 Ford Crown Victoria parked out front. Then he came back into the store with a woman, and they attempted to return a television at the customer service desk. The store discovered he had returned a number of items recently and called police, who were able to recover the bike and a box of Legos from the car. The 70-year-old Boston man was arrested on a charge of larceny over $250. The woman, who is from Brighton, was summonsed to Waltham District Court on a charge of larceny over $250.
Incidents
March 13, 10:06 a.m.: A fire broke out in a two-family home on Evans Street. Smoke was seen coming out of the rear of the home. The blaze did an estimated $10,000 damage to the kitchen in one unit and some smoke damage to the other unit. The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
March 14, 5:05 p.m.: A tree fell on Palfrey Street during a wind storm and struck a home. The town-owned tree hit a duplex and broke a window, damaged the roof and gutter, and also struck a wire fence. The total damage was estimated at $3,000.
March 15, 11:03 a.m.: A Peqoussette Street resident believed someone had tried to break into her home, but after investigating police believe it was unlikely that it was an attempted to break in. It may have been a wind or the door may have been left slightly ajar.
March 17, 11:55 a.m.: A senior citizen received a call from a person who said he was her grandson. He claimed to be staying at a hotel in Boston and talked her into buying a $950 gift card to a department store. The woman spoke with her family and determined the caller was not her grandson, and they were able to stop payment on the gift card. Police urged people to take caution and verify information before making such a purchase.
March 17, 1:42 p.m.: A Royal Street resident reported being the victim of a phone scam. She got a call from a person saying that her nephew was involved in an accident and told the woman that she was responsible for $1,200 in damages. She was told to send $1,200 to Puerto Rico using Western Union. The woman sent the money. Police are investigating.
