Continuing a their stellar seasons, Watertown High School runners Emily Koufos and James Piccirilli finished first and second, respectively, in the girls and boys Div. 5 Eastern Mass. Cross Country Championship on Saturday.
Koufos, a junior, took the lead about halfway through the 5K race at the Wrentham Development Center, and finished well ahead of the other runners. Her time of 19:05.96 was 20 seconds ahead of the second place finisher.
In the boys race, Piccirilli came in second place, just two tenths ahead of the third place finisher. The senior finished in a time of 16:18.21, 13 seconds behind the winner.
Both runners will compete in the All-State Cross Country Meet on Saturday, Nov. 19 at the Gardener Municipal Golf Course.
The pair had a great season going even before their performance at the Eastern Mass. Championships. Both set course records at Arsenal Park – the Raiders’ home course – this season. At the Middlesex League Championships Koufos finished fourth, and Piccirilli placed sixth.
Koufos, Piccirilli and Elizabeth Powderly, who finished 19th at the Eastern Mass. meet, will be competing in the Footlocker Regional Meet in New York City on Nov. 26.
