The Watertown Education Foundation (WEF) raised nearly $20,000 at its third annual, “Dancing with the Stars” event held in May. This year, Georgia (Butler) Mulgrew, Hosmer School guidance counselor, took home the trophy and was named the 2016 Dancing with the Stars champion. Cunniff School parent Kim Seacrist was awarded the Fan Favorite.
Modeled after the popular television show, the event featured Watertown “stars” partnered with professional dancers from Ballroom in Boston, located in Allston. Kendra Foley, last year’s winner, served as one of this year’s judges, along with first time judge Manny Corriea and returning judge, “Miss Maria” Maria Scalzi-Monahan.
Exciting and entertaining performances were also given by the six other Stars: Marianne Cameron, Cunniff School; Chris Crombie, Watertown Boys & Girls Club; Mia Depaolis, Mialisa Salon owner, Watertown; David Leon, Watertown resident; Ernie Thebado, Watertown Recreation Department; and Michael Venezia, Watertown resident.
“More than 350 people attended Dancing with the Stars,” said Elaina Griffith, WEF co-president. “We are so grateful to our generous community for their support of our students and the Watertown schools!”
All money raised from DWTS will directly benefit the WEF grant fund. The grant cycle for fall 2016 begins in September and ends in January. Funds were raised through ticket sales, corporate sponsors in the Ad book, and fan favorite ballots. Planning will begin in the fall for the fourth annual Dancing with the Stars to be held in 2017.
