Traditionally the basketball state finals have been played in Worcester at the DCU Center, but the MIAA basketball committee decided to change things up and move it to the birthplace of basketball – Springfield, said Watertown High School Athletic Director Mike Lahiff, who is chairman of the MIAA basketball committee.
“It is a trial for the first year, an experiment to see if people feel like it is a nice thing to do,” Lahiff said.
The Div. 2 and Div. 4 games will be played at Springfield College, and the Div. 1 and Div. 3 games will take place at the MassMutual Center. Both venues are close to the Basketball Hall of Fame, a stop for all the teams in the finals, Lahiff said.
Springfield is about a 90 minute drive from Watertown. For those who want to spend the night there, the MIAA has a list of hotels in the city (the Raiders will be staying at the Marriott). Click here for the list.
