Quarterback Deon Smith led Watertown to a 31-7 romp over North Reading in Friday night’s Div. 4 North Section semifinal.
Smith scored the sixth-seeded Raiders’ first three touchdowns in the game played at second seeded North Reading (7-2). First the junior ripped off a 66-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. North Reading answered when Matt McCarthy got a 61-yard TD run of his own.
Not to be outdone, Smith ran for an 8 yard score in the second quarter, then after hafltime he put an exclamation point on it with a third quarter 71-yard touchdown romp.
After a Conor Kennelly hit a 23-yard field goal, Smith got another touchdown – this time through the air. Kyle Foley took a pass from Smith and ran 61 yard for the final score of the night.
This was the Raiders second straight road win over higher seeded teams that came in with just one loss. The Raiders, now 6-3, will play the North Section final on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. at fifth-seeded Stoneham.
Despite Watertown beating Stoneham and having a better record, the MIAA seeding rules gave the edge to the Spartans. Stoneham beat fourth-seed Triton a week ago and defeated eighth-seeded Bedford this week.
The winner of the North Section final plays the winner of the Div. 4 South Section final between Holliston and Hanover on either Nov. 20 or 21 for a spot in the Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium on Dec. 5.
Go Red Raiders !!!
