You’ve probably heard it from Senator Elizabeth Warren already; “the System is Rigged.” Since the 1980s, all the economic growth in the US has gone to the top 10 percent, leaving nothing for the rest of us. The Tenpercenters don’t need to worry about their future; they have hired an army of lobbyists to advance their agendas, reduce their tax burdens, lighten their risk while underwriting their greed, and increase their wealth for generations. But who are the lobbyists for the rest of us? Unions used to be one of those protections, but the Republican war on unions for the past 35 years has reduced their influence. And after unions, who else? It’s a short list, but after unions, the only place we can turn for our say is ourselves. Look around, there is no one really lobbying for the Middle Class, so if you feel you need a voice…then speak up. To “un-rig the system, you and I are the last line of defense. What can we do?
Hear some new ideas on Sunday, July 19th. ProgressiveWatertown, in conjunction with MoveOn and Robert Reich, is hosting a Teach-In to Save the Economy. We will be meeting at the Apartments at the Coolidge Schools, 319 Arlington St, Watertown starting at 4 p.m. We will watching some videos from Robert Reich on ways to make a difference, and we’ll follow up with a discussion. Hopefully we’ll come up with an action plan, some volunteers, and we’re started. This is really about what kind of opportunity will there be for your children and your grandchildren.
“Never doubt that a small groups of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead.
I hope you will join us. It’s too late to wait for change, we must make change happen. If you have any questions/comments, please email; progressivewatertown@gmail.com
